The Free State Madeira Flower Festival 2016

Through continuous storms over the weekend, the inaugural Free State Madeira Flower Festival was blessed with a few hours of sunshine for the duration of the flower parade and festival.

The main road of Parys was closed down and the streets were lined by roughly 50 000 visitors as the sweet scent of fresh cut flowers was carried through town on a light breeze. The flower festival proved to be a momentous and memorable occasion.

With 130 000+ cut flowers, 600 dancers, and entertainers, not to mention the five giant floats, Parys held its name high and the Free State Flower Festival will not be forgotten soon.

The Festival is a joint venture between the Free State and the Autonomous Region of Madeira and is aimed at stimulating flower production and exports, as well as attracting more tourists into our area.

“This event was of the highest standard and I was extremely impressed,” said President Albuquerque from Madeira. “It was simply magnificent – the dancing, the quality of the flowers, the performers. I was amazed at how well the organisers prepared and executed the event with such short notice. We are certainly going to come back next year and continue this partnership. Furthermore we are going to invite a float from the Free State to our annual festival in Madeira next year to demonstrate our alliance.”

“There was a vibe like never before in the small town of Parys, literally thousands lined the streets to witness the breath-taking parade. “
